We have small classes and each teacher has an assistant this makes for a good child/teacher ratio.
 
We have experienced, qualified teachers who desire to give your child a quality early childhood education based on Christian principles.

Our Goal

We desire to work closely with parents to foster optimum growth for each child.  We believe you will find an unusual atmosphere of love and understanding in every classroom, in a setting geared to the needs, special abilities and interests of each child.  We seek to provide opportunities for the development of each child mentally, physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually.

Curriculum

Our curriculum provides group interaction to produce social-emotional growth, academic readiness activities to build vocabulary, speech and language skills, physical training and creative use of many art media, as well as color and number concepts.

School Year

Gateway Christian is open September through May.

Visitors

 We encourage parents to visit our school before enrolling.  There are two options available:
 
-Drop by any time we are open and we will give you a walk-through tour including a few minutes in the classroom.  You are welcome to bring your child.
 
-Sit in on a class.  Please schedule an appointment with us ahead of time to observe a classroom for an extended period of time.  We ask that you do not bring your child.

Registration

Registration begins February 1st of each year for school families already enrolled at Gateway Christian and March 1st for the community.  Your are urged to enroll your child as early as possible as class sizes are limited.

FIELD TRIP:  Please bring your child's carseat!  Because we are going through stories in Genesis in the Bible, we will be talking about languages.  Our field trip will be to Wycliffe Bible Translators in Milwaukie.  They have copies of the Bible in over one hundred different languages!  There is also a large mural showing people from each continent which is always appreciated by both the children and parents alike.  If you are able to go on this field trip, I know you will enjoy it.

*Please have your child get enough sleep – about ten hours each night.
 
*School begins at 9:00 when the classroom doors will open.  Please have your child here at that time.  The doors will be locked at 9:10 and you will need to go to the office to get a tardy slip if you come later.  The children do corrections on the previous day’s work at the beginning of the day, and once teaching has begun, it is distracting to have children come in late.
 
*If you have your child use the restroom when they come in the building, that will be helpful.
 
*Snacks are for a little energy boost – not a meal!  Half a fruit or a gogurt is all that’s needed.  We have snack about 10:35.
Birthday snacks can be shared with the whole class, and may be whatever your child likes.  Some suggestions: popsicles, ice cream cup, favorite snack, cupcakes, cake, doughnuts, etc.  They will be served just before school is out, about 2:40.  Let me know what day you want to bring the birthday treats.
 
*Lunch will be the same as last year, and a microwave will be available to heat children’s lunches.
 
*Recess will be 10:30, during the lunch break, and again about 2:00.  Send a sweater or jacket for cool mornings.  Save BOX TOPS for EDUCATION for our playground!
 
*Book orders are sent home the first of each month.  Make checks to Scholastic.
 
*If your child is going home with another student, please send a note with permission for me to release him/her to the other parent picking them up. 
 
*The line leader each day leads us in the pledge, a song and our memory verses.  He/she also brings Show ‘n Tell.  Children follow in alphabetical order of 1st names.  If your child forgets, it’s fine to bring show ‘n tell the next day.   
 
*Parking is in the front lot, but if you like, you may drive around to the side door and pick up your child there.  This is especially helpful if you have a napping child in a car seat.  Just knock (hard!) on the door after 3:00. 
 
*Homework will begin in a few weeks.  I ask you to have your child read the assigned pages out loud to you each day.  When a child reads two times a day, they make good progress in reading.  I will be reading daily with each child in reading groups.  You will give them the other occasion to read.  I may send a math activity or game to play at home at times as well.

April Fool’s Day was sure fun.  It worked because all of you parents kept it a secret J  And thanks to Lois Stephenson who cooked all the hot dogs, etc., for us. 
 
Our field trip will be to the Broadmoor Golf Course where Drew’s Dad is the head pro golfer, and Lori helps manage.  Won’t that be fun?  But only if the weather is good.  So I’m putting the whole week on the permission form, but we are hoping for Monday, April 14.  We will leave school about 10:30 and return early afternoon.  The children will eat lunch in the clubhouse.  Please send a lunch which does not need heating in the microwave.
 
Our final spelling test this week was later than usual: it seemed too soon after spring break to give the final test Tuesday.  They did quite well.  Now, we combine the last two spelling tests for spelling words this week.  When helping them with the words, stress these rules:
 
When adding a suffix beginning with a vowel:
Double the final consonant of a short vowel word (hop=hopping)
Kick out the final e of a long vowel word (hope=hoping)
Just tack on the suffix if it begins with a consonant. (“s”, “ly”, “ful”,)

FIELD TRIP
If you would like to go on field trips this year but have a certain day of the week when you can never come, please let me know soon and I will try to work around that, at least part of the time.

MATH:  This month we will be doing counting, sorting, graphing and sums.
 
Line Leaders also have Show ‘n Tell that day.  If they forget to bring Show ‘n Tell, they can always show it the following day. 
 
I mentioned children could warm lunches in the microwave, but that will not be available on Wednesdays.  Plan to bring a cold lunch that day.
 
The Current book that was sent home is a fundraiser for the new playground set we hope to buy for the school.  The Box Tops for Education money we receive will all be applied toward the playground as well. 
 
Sunday’s paper had a 500 point coupon in the Fred Meyer ad.  If you purchase $20. of Campbell’s items and bring the receipt and coupon to school, we will receive 500 points!  It is only good through Saturday, September 8.

Dr. Seuss' birthday is always a fun celebration.  Your child will read a Dr. Seuss instead of the usual reader.
 
Our field trip this month will be to Papa's Pizza.  They will take us back to the kitchen and show us how they prepare the ingredients for the pizzas they bake later in the day.  The children will see the bread machines and ther ovens they use.
 
They will provide a pizza for the children to share as a snack and then the children can play in the playroom before the restaurant opens.  Note this is a snack and they will still need a lunch when they return to school. 
 
I hope each chuild can attend the spaghetti dinner on the 9th.
 
Spring Break will be the week of March 20-30.  There will be no school during this week.

Book Order:  I usually am happy to extend the deadline, but on this order we want it back before school is out for Christmas break, so I will need to have them turned in by the end of the day on Friday.  If you want something as a surprise, just mark that on the order form.  I'll hand it to you without your child knowing.
 
Field Trip:  We will reschedule our trip to Wycliffe ASAP.  We will also be going to the home of our librarian, Mrs. Hintz, to view her collection of hundreds of narivities.  As always, you are encouraged to come on any of our field trips that fit into your schedule.
 
I do not send folders and reading assignments home over school break.  Often families are so busy, and they just get lost in the  confusion.    Do keep reading to your child, and have them read to you whenever possible.  This would be a GREAT time to go to the public library and have your child get a card if they do not have one of their own.  We will be going to the public library in a few months and if your child has a card he/she can check out a book at that time.

Be sure your children wear green today!

Our annual Father-Child Spaghetti Dinner will be held Friday, March 17th from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Cost:  $4.00 per person 
 
This is a special evening for our children and their fathers to attend together.  Fathers, if for some reason you are unable to attend, we want your child to invite a grandpa, uncle or special friend.
 
Dinner will include spaghetti (all you can eat), carrots, celery, olives, French bread, milk, coffee and cookies.
 
After dinner, children will be dismissed with their teachers for a special fun treat.  Fathers will remain in the room for a special speaker.  Rob Van Horn, former school parent, father of four and grandfather of six very active children, will share with you for about 20 minutes.
 
Reservations and dinner payment need to be to school no later than Thursday, March 16th.  Please bring your reservation slip and money to the office.
 
Moms, you can be an important part of this event by helping beforehand with the cooking and set-up.  WE NEED LOTS OF HELP!!!

We will be going on a hike (all dowhill) about one mile, in Forest Park.  At the end the children will be able to hunt for a pumpkin.  We will go only if the weather looks dry.  A rain date will be Thursday, October 13th.  We will leave our classroom about 10:00, eat lunch at the park, and return to school before 3 p.m.  Make sure your child has warm enough clothing as the trail is in the shade, and it can get chilly.

Reservations and dinner payment need to be to school no later than Thursday, March 16th.  Please bring your reservation slip and money to the office.

November was a wonderful month learning about the pilgrims, Indians, Thanksgiving and thankfulness!  A very big THANK YOU to our  parents who sent items or helped with our Feast!
 
There are only two more weeks of school until Christmas break!  Can you believe that?  As we approach this holiday season, I will be praying that your Christmas season will be joyful and meaningful with those you love.   
 
I will be looking forward to seeing everyone back to school on Monday January 5, 2009
